Geocache Description:

This Earthcache brings you to a feature we see all the time but not take notice. A rock cut along a highway.

Around 430 million years ago the world was a vastly different place not only in the way the land looked but in how the continents were arranged.

This period was the Silurian period and it shaped the way the rock and landscape in this area looks. With sea levels at roughly 180m above the values they are now this area was likely under a lot of water and as with all bodies of water they move.

Currents ran over local sea and water beds and along the way carved out impressions in the rock and land. These impressions are known as flute casts.

Flute casts are created by water carving out indents or flutes in fine sediment which then got filled in creating an overlying bed. Once the process in which the rock is formed occurred you have a cast made of all the flutes.

After the Casts are exposed again (by natural or man made processes) you can visibly see the direction of flow of the water body that created the flutes.

The nature of the flute's creation is that the flute is in the shape of a blunt arrow head with the deeper narrow section at the upstream side and the shallow wide at the down stream side.

In order to log this Earthcache as found please do the two tasks listed (picture taking is optional):

1. Located at eye level, under the letter "s" and beside the large "E" measure how far apart the two flute casts are.
2. Determine what direction the flow was. (assuming the rock was laid flat in the orientation it is in now.)
3.Take a picture of yourself and/or your GPSr with as many of the flute casts that you can in the frame.

E-mail me these two answers through my profile.
