Abans de començar, quatre dades sobre La Vajol:
- La Vajol
és el poble més alt de la comarca: 546 metres. També és el més
petit demogràficament amb poc més de 100 habitants. Té una extensió
de 4,7 kilòmetres quadrats i una part d'ell és fronterer amb França
pel Coll de Lli, a la veïna comarca del
Vallespir.
- L’any
1939, La Vajol va passar un dies de gran activitat política i fou
seu, conjuntament, de la Presidència de la República i de la
Presidència del Govern. El poble més petit de la comarca havia
estat, paradoxalment, la capital de l'Estat
Espanyol.
- El passat recent de La
Vajol està lligat als tresors. Part del tresor de la República fou
amagat a la Mina Canta (també dita mina d’En Negrin; N
42º24.100, E 2º47.200). Pels volts de l’1 de febrer de 1939
els quadres amagats, protegits per carrabiners, foren traslladats a
la Societat de Nacions a Suïssa.

Before starting, three facts you may want to know
about La
Vajol:
- La Vajol is the
highest village in the county: 546 metres high. It is also the less
populated, it has little more than 100 inhabitants. It is 4.7 km2
and it stands next to the French border. Through Coll de Lli you
reach the French county of Vallespir.
- In 1939, La
Vajol lived restless days as the Spanish Civil War was reaching its
end: it became the last seat of both the Republic and the Spanish
Government's Presidency. The smallest village of the Alt Empordà
was, paradoxically, the capital of Spain.
- La Vajol recent's past is deeply linked to
treasures: part of the Republic's treasure was hidden in the Canta
Mine (also called Negrin's Mine N
42º24.100, E 2º47.200). Around 1st February 1939 some hidden
pictures, which had been taken from the Prado Museum in Madrid to
protect them, were taken to the Society of Nations in
Switzerland.
