Geocache Description:

Scattered throughout the countryside are former Native American homesteads that no longer have anyone living on them. This cache area, although located on the Black River State Forest property today, once was part of a 40 acre allotment that was held in trust for tribal members. This allotment, as well as many others throughout the State were later lost due to erroneous taxing by local governments that occurred after a 25 year span of tax exempt status starting around 1888 – thus catching many tribal members off guard of the circumstances that were occurring. Often times, many of these allotments were acquired by large logging owners in the early 1900’s, who would then have the families living there forcibly removed so they could pulp off the property. Unfortunately, associated with these allotments are many family cemeteries that tend to go unnoticed by passerby.

The Carrimon family has had many members who have served their country. Located near the cache are several members that served in the Civil War. The Ho-Chunk Nation continues to maintain these and many other burials throughout Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota. Please respect this area as a burial site if you visit this cache.

The cache container is not in contact with any gravestones, monuments or other memorials. Please respect the area. If the cemetery is in use, please refrain from caching this site.

The Geocache Notification Form has been submitted to Peter Bakken, Black River State Forest Superintendent. Geocaches placed within the State Forest requires permission by means of a notification form.
We would like to thank the State of Wisconsin for allowing us to place caches within the State Forest so all can enjoy the area as we have.
