Along the old (non-operational) railway line, overlooking the shores of Lough Finn.
An Mhuc Dhubh (Fintown Railway), is the only operational railway in Co. Donegal. It was originally opened on the 3rd June 1895 and was built to connect Stranorlar and Glenties. The railway transported such goods as wool, turf and potatoes as well as people.
Due to the lack of economic activity in the area in the late 1940's and 50's the train closed down.
This unique train journey is a three mile return trip. On 3rd June 1995 this section of the track, at Fintown, was reopened to commemorate the original opening in 1895.
The track is set amidst spectacular scenery overlooking Lough Finn. The setting prompted the famous international playwright, Brian Friel to pronounce;
"What is on offer is a unique journey along the shores of a lake as grand as any in Switzerland or Minnesota."
NOTE 30 Aug 2018 - access to the walking route is no longer available from the station. Park in the old health centre beside the station - go through the rusty gates onto the disused area of the station platform and the stile to the Slí (walking route) is immediately to your left.
