Geocache Description:

Portimão is situated on the right bank of the river Arade, facing the sea, and it’s the second most populous city of the Algarve.

It was a prehistoric village, Phoenician, Greek and Carthaginian commercial warehouse. Under Roman domination it became very well known due to its excellent harbor.

Portimão was a small fishing centre that in 1278 was conquered to the Muslims by the Knights of the Order of Santiago.

In the reign of King Afonso V (1463) Vila Nova de Portimão was born, quickly developped by the African coast navigations.

1755 earthquake shakes the life and economy of the village, which begins to recover only in the late 19th century. Despite having grown favoring maritime activities, fish canning industry and shipbuilding, didn’t neglect the saltcultivation (salicultura) and trade of rural products like dried fruit – locust, fig and almond - and also wood and cork.

From mid 20th century, the growth of tourism was definitely a turning point in the county and its economy.

In 1924, Portimão is promoted to city by former President Manuel Teixeira Gomes who was born in this town.
