In 1870, with the completion of a 7.6 mile long canal that stretched from Keokuk north to Nashville, IA, the river boats were now able to navigate the Mississippi River a lot more easily. The canal was made up of a series of 3 locks. As the river boats traveled north on the river, they know that they had Iowa when they saw this canal. With the number of lock gates that a river pilot had to navigate through, Keokuk became known as the "Gate City", meaning the entrance to Iowa.
