O Centro de Investigação Champalimaud concretiza o objectivo da Fundação de construir um centro de investigação científica multidisciplinar, translacional e de referência no campo da biomedicina. Este Centro garantirá todas as condições para que investigadores e académicos, nacionais e estrangeiros, desenvolvam projectos de excelência nas áreas das neurociências e da oncologia.
O Centro dispõe de excelentes condições e das mais modernas tecnologias para investigação biomédica, bem como das infra-estruturas necessárias ao ensino pós-graduado e a programas de mestrado e de doutoramento. Para prosseguir estes objectivos a Fundação optou por um modelo de eficácia comprovada: a investigação translacional, ou seja, fazendo permanentemente a ponte entre a investigação básica e a investigação clínica, assegurando que as descobertas científicas e as novas tecnologias se aplicam no desenvolvimento e no ensaio de soluções para os problemas clinicamente relevantes. Desta ligação íntima entre cientistas e médicos, entre investigação e tratamento, nasce mais rapidamente a resposta para os problemas que afligem as pessoas.
O Centro Champalimaud será aberto ao público e para ser usados por todos. Os jardins e restantes áreas públicas ocuparão uma parte substancial do espaço disponível. Jardins panorâmicos com uma grande variedade de árvores e áreas verdes, um anfiteatro ao ar livre para a realização de espectáculos musicais, sessões científicas ou artísticas - tudo isto tendo como pano de fundo a água e o Tejo - ficarão à disposição da cidade.

Two years after the first stone was laid in the Doca de Pedrouços area of Lisbon, the Champalimaud Foundation has opened the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown. The Foundation welcomed guests, colleagues and collaborators from around the world to Portugal on October 5th to mark the inauguration of a centre that will strive to make crucial breakthroughs in the fields of neuroscience and cancer research.
The Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown is a multidisciplinary centre for translational research of excellence, with the best possible conditions to attract and retain the best researchers, academics and medical doctors from Portugal and abroad in the fields of neurosciences and oncology. The Centre includes laboratories for basic and clinical research, an ambulatory care centre, a vivarium, an auditorium, conference rooms, teaching facilities and an exhibition area. The state of the art facilities for basic and clinical research and for teaching will foster front line research as well as post-graduate and doctorate programmes, and the diagnosis and treatment of neurological and cancer patients.
In order to honour the historical relevance of the site - from where the famous Portuguese navigators departed in the 15th and 16th centuries - and to promote the relationship of the citizens with the sea and the “unknown”, the research centre will allow free access of the public to the waterfront through wide landscaped areas around its buildings.
