Geocache Description:

Channel between Kalmar and West Lake in the south of Kalmar.
Stensö channel is one of Sweden's youngest channels. It was excavated by the unemployed laborer as relief work during the years 1932 to 1934. One can thus say that the channel was added thanks to the bad times during the interwar period.
The channel is 10 meters wide and digging took considerably longer than planned because it was an extremely hard job to dig down into the soil layers.
Some argue that already, Gustav Vasa had to dig a canal along this section between Kalmar and West Lake, while others say that the first canal was dug here years from 1611 to 1613, then during the war against the Danes.
There is no historical evidence for any of these claims.
Historians believe that there is evidence that the Vikings during his voyages sailed up the West Lake and then pulled their boats on logs over the sea at Stensö narrowest point, that is where the canal today.
