Jan Wnek:

Jan Wnek urodzil sie 28 sierpnia 1828 we wsi Kaczówka w chlopskiej rodzinie. W 1858 r. ozenil sie i zamieszkal w Odporyszowie. Miejscowy proboszcz zainteresowany rzezbiarskimi zdolnosciami Wneka zlecil mu wykonanie drewnianych rzezb o charakterze sakralnym. Jednej z nich Wnek najprawdopodobniej uzyczyl swojej twarzy.

Szczególnie jednak Wnek zaslynal ze swoich zainteresowan lotnictwem. Obserwujac budowe ptasich skrzydel skonstruowal pierwowzór lotni. Miala ona forme skrzydel przypinanych do tulowia i nóg za pomoca uprzezy. Szkielet skrzydel zrobiony byl z drewna jesionowego i powleczony byl plótnem zaimpregnowanym olejem lnianym.

W czerwcu 1866 r. Wnek wykonal pierwszy dlugi lot z wysokiej na 45 m wiezy kosciola w Odporyszowie. Lot mial dlugosc ok 2 km i zakonczyl sie pomyslnie.

Jan Wnek:

Jan Wnek was born on 28th September 1828 in village Kaczówka in a peasant family. Most probably he never attended to any school, but surely since his childhood he demonstrated interest in sculpture and birds. Thanks to his manual skills, he gained a carpenter profession. In 1858 he got married and stayed in Odporyszów. A local rector got interested in Wnek's sculptural talent and commissioned him to make wooden sacral sculptures. He made several hundreds of sculptures in total and their artistry is often compared to the works of the famous Veit Stoss. About 80 sculptures of Jan Wnek survived till now. The face of one is most probably Wnek's face impression.

Nevertheless, the most famous hobby of Wnek was not sculpturing but aviation. He constructed a prototype of a hang-glider based on his observations of bird's wings structure. Two wings were fastened to aviator's trunk and legs using a harness. The framework of the wings was made with ash timber and covered with linen which was impregnated with linseed oil. Steering mechanism was attached to legs: these were flexible plies of wood fixed with strings. He named his invention as "loty" (flyers). A possible reconstruction of this device is located in the Ethnographic Museum in Kraków.

In June 1866 Wnek accomplished his 1st long flight from a 45 m high tower of the church in Odporyszów. The flight was about 2 km long and successfully finished. In this event Wnek preceded by 25 years Otto Lilenthal who is considered to be a forerunner of gliding (and his 1st flights were much shorter than those of Wnek)!

The last Wnek's flight took place on 20th June 1869 and during that tragic event he fell down from a height. As a result of serious injuries, he died three weeks after, on 10th July 1869 and was buried on a cemetery in Odporyszów.

Despite his precursory achievements, Wnek isn't a famous person. During his life he was considered to be an eccentric, he was also suspected of contacts with "evil spirits". Just after his tragic accident, the local community burned his "loty". Maybe for that reason his grave and documents about its location didn't survive. After WWII the communist government in Poland tried to announce him a hero and genius, but his religious activity was an ideological barrier. Eventually, in 1990's some environments invested their interst in Wnek's history. In Odporyszów a monument commemorated him was erected and a museum with his sculptures was opened by the church (N 50° 09.075 E 020° 54.828); also a memorial plaque was installed near the spot of his tragic fall.
