A remembrance cache to help remember the 12th (Service) Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment - more commonly known as 'The Sheffield Pals'.
[Please note that when it snows here it can get very deep, making it very difficult to find this cache.] Over the winter months of 1914/15 the men of the 'Sheffield Pals', who were stationed at the Redmires Camp close by, trained here before being sent to the war in France. By July 1915 all had been killed attacking the heavily fortified hill-top village of Serre. The training here consisted of learning how to dig trenches and gun emplacements. Although difficult to see from the ground, the slopes all around this cache are littered with the remains of different types of trench. At the time of laying this cache the satellite view clearly shows the remains of some of these trenches, particularly to the North East. From the cache you can just make out the U shapes that are easy to see on the satellite picture. It would be easy to picture the WWI scene here, with what look like several bomb craters all around. However these craters are the remains of an old sandstone quarry. This is a nice quiet place with amazing 360 degree views. Take a moment to remember those who have lost their lives in the many conflicts since WWI.
