How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

A 3 stage cache leading you on a 1.7 mile walk around the less frequented parts of the Downs Banks with a total of 250 feet ascent (and descent !). You WILL need your own pen and paper to note the final cache coordinates. This cache is placed with the kind permission of the National Trust and with specific thanks to Rod Whiteman and his ranger team for the brilliant work they do at the Downs Banks.

This trail will lead you round some less frequented parts of the right hand bank of the Down’s to the final cache from where you could progress on to our other cache "Hangin' with the birds" as well as other cache hiders caches -A cache for Jamie and Jumping in muddy puddles - on a circuit back to the car. (It would be possible to simultaneously do Barlaston’s Downer but the direction of the recommended First Down would need a second circuit).
Enjoy the changing environments and views. There are great views from the highest point of the downs at the Millennium viewpoint from Casper’s trail route as it passes near.
Who knows you may even be accosted by an overfriendly wet Golden Retriever as Casper himself checks your progress.
All waypoints and the final caches can be reached following established paths and are close to the paths so please don’t crash through undergrowth.
Park at the main car park N52 55.564 W002 09.003 or if full, try the parking near the ford N52 55.418 W002 09.062.
Head along the main track to orienteering post “S99” Waypoint 1 N52 55.661 W002 08.957 and then turn right to head off uphill. Take a rest at the log bench Waypoint2 N52 55.680 W002 08.847 from where you take the short path from the bench towards STAGE 1.
STAGE 1 – A NATURAL HIDING PLACE N52 55.669 W002 08.850 contains the North final coordinates.
Keep to the obvious paths to reach Waypoint 3 N52 55.574 W002 08.768 then onto -
STAGE 2 - A BOLT OUT OF THE BLUE N52 55.610 W002 08.634 contains the West final coordinates. This container is about 3 cm long and hidden at roughly shoulder height.
Now continue following the established paths to reach the Millenium viewpoint at Waypoint 4 N52 55.819 W002 08.653 before changing direction to reach the FINAL CACHE . We recommend following the footpath to reach the north coordinates before heading off path for 30m to the final cache.
