Montpensier La butte de Montpensier
 



 C'est au pied de la butte de Montpensier en l'an 892 que le roi Eudes aurait battu les normands, faisant ainsi entrer ce lieu dans l'Histoire. Mais c'est au XIème siècle qu'est évoqué pour la première fois la forteresse de "Mons Pancherii", le mont de la panse, toponymie très parlante de la forme naturelle de la colline. En 1226, le Roi de France Louis VIII, dit le lion rendit l'âme en ces lieux ayant contracté une fièvre dans les marais du Languedoc lors de sa croisade contre les albigeois.
La vieille forteresse de Montpensier qui contrôlait la porte Nord de l'Auvergne fut détruite dès 1633 sur ordre du Cardinal de Richelieu. Le site servi d'abord de carrière de matériaux puis une exploitation de gypse value à la commune le nom de Montplâtre à la Révolution.
