This cache is placed in the Ira Nichols Picnic Area. Its a nice nature area in a scenic area of Iowa Falls along the Iowa River. You are looking for a small container with a log.
This area sits on 16 acres of primitive area and timber. The area is located within the city of Iowa Falls and only 3 blocks west of Ellsworth Community College. The Ira Nichols Wild Flower and Bird Refuge is an important outdoor classroom for ECC students in biology classes and the Conservation Technology Program. Walking through Union Cemetery on field trips to the refuge and you can pause at the gravesite of Ira a. Nichols, before entering the refuge.
Ira purchased a beautiful tract of woods along Elk Run creek for the purpose of protecting native wildlife so that “future generations might see and know what once grew in the pristine forests and on the prairies of Iowa”. The refuge was donated to the Hardin County Conservation Board with the condition that all wildlife, including animals, birds, flowers, trees and shrubs be protected from public and private desecration. The chain link fence, brick pillars, and iron gate remain as a tribute to his conservation efforts.
The cache is located in the picnic area, which is open from 6 am to 10:30 pm every day. There is nice parking right next to the woods. Short hike and a quick search should net you the cache. To explore the nature preserve, you can make arrangements with Hardin County Conservation.
