Meet fellow cachers and learn all about your GPS Receiver
Operations from experienced cachers on Thursday, April 14,
beginning at 6:50 p.m., at a private residence outside of
Soldotna (Gaswell Road to Jones Road to Scotch Run to the
published coordinates). Allergy note - There are a number of very
friendly dogs and cats at this residence.
Tonight's speaker is Scott Aleckson (SSO
JOAT) who will be broadcasting live from his secret
lair just outside of Soldotna. Scott started using GPS during the
era of the Garmin GPS40 and the Magellan Trailblazer of the early
1990's. They didn't have "maps" and you were astounded when you
could find your way back to within a quarter mile of where you
parked your truck. SA was the law and you needed to know about
Almanac Data and EPE when you could only use 8 satellites at a
time. Scott will pour his GPS experience into a fast-paced and
informative presentation so that you might better use your own GPSr
to its fullest on your next geocaching adventure.
Some of the topics to be discussed at this EduVent include:
- How GPS Works
- Types of GPS Recievers (GPSr)
- GPSr Basemaps, Topo Maps, and Street Maps
- GPSr Settings, Datums, and Coordinates
- Loading Caches into a GPSr
- Navigating with your GPSr
- Marking Accurate Waypoints
- Getting the most out of Batteries
- GPSr Tips and Tricks
