Cache container is a magnetic micro in Florence Center, near one of three small parks created in late 1800s in the Village of Florence. Known earlier as the Cosmian Hall Park due to it’s location fronting the area where Cosmian Hall once stood, the Florence Civic Center is now located in the same spot. Cosmian Hall was built in 1874 to accommodate the growth of the Free Congregational Society of Florence, a free-thinking religious body outside the mainstream denominations of the day. Sheffeld’s “History of Florence” described the building as “a noble edifice, built in a commanding location, with ample arrangements for the general uses of the public in its main hall, with a seating capacity of nearly seven hundred, with a large stage and abundant stage appointments, including organ and grand piano. This hall has been opened on all occasions of general public interest, celebrations, and anniversaries, for the people’s use, without any expense to them or the town.” Some of the most well known speakers of the liberal and reform movements spoke here, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Frederick Douglass and Julia Ward Howe. It was demolished in 1948 due its deteriorating condition. The little park is now known as Stanley Kododzinski Park in honor of a man (known as Red Jake) the unofficial “sidewalk superintendent” of Florence. He kept the parks weeded and the sidewalks cleaned. Check out the large old stone drinking fountain at the apex of the park. This was a gift to the town from Julius Maine. It had an upper circular trough for horses and a lower trough for dogs to get a drink. Nearby is the Florence Lilly Library. As always use stealth as this area has high traffic. Please replace cache as you found it. Congratulations to Caseymtn for FTF
