Parish Peregrination is intended as a circular walking route, as opposed to a cache and dash circuit, linking our additions to sadexploration's Church Micro series here at Goodnestone ( GC2VNYW - CM 1820), Nonington (GC2VPVE - CM 1822), Womenswold (GC2WDV5- CM 1859), Barfrestone (GC2VKH4 - CM 1817), Chillenden (GC2VKF6 - CM 1815),and Knowlton (GC2TEA6 - CM 1786).
The route is intended to start at and will be described from Parish Peregrination - Rosings. The entire route is approximately 14 miles (22.5km). It will take in the 6 fore mentioned Church Micro's plus 23 additional 'trail' caches. There is an opportunity to split the route into two, one of 6.5 miles (10.5km) the other 8 miles (13km). The route is via public rights of way with a number of moderate climbs and descents, BUT does require some quiet lane walking where the usual care will be needed. There are NO FTF prizes as such, although a number of the small caches only contain a very neat LED Torch, so PLEASE Trade Up - Trade Even - Or Don't Trade these items folks.
From Parish Peregrination - Pinners Farm House you will emerge onto the partial metalled driveway for the property, continue along it, it's still a footpath. Great Pinner Wood is to your right all the way to the cache, so you may have trouble with tree cover, but hopefully the clue will assist.
View of Nonington from 'Pynnars Helle (Pinners Hill)
Once you have found the cache, continue along the footpath emerging onto Pinners Hill overlooking Nonington village. St Mary's church and Nonington village can be seen clearly from up here. The earliest mention of ‘Pynnars Helle’ is in a document of 1487. The name appears to derive from the Pyner family who farmed in the parish from at least the late 15th to the early 19th centuries.
Carefully cross the road onto the footpath through the fields towards the village. You will emerge onto Old Court Hill. Old Court was an ancient estate in the parish of Nonington held by the Goodneston family who took their name from their possessions and residence in that parish and continued uninterrupted succession in this family into the reign of King Henry III through to the reign of King Charles II. If you look right up the road you will see the remnants of Great Pinners Wood's west boundary which still stands to the rear of "Highleas" at the top of Old Court Hill. Turn left down Old Court Hill towards St Mary's Church (GC2VPVE - Church Micro 1822) At the bottom of Old Court Hill you will pass the present Church Farm on your left and a property named 'Farthingales' on your right. This late medieval farmhouse once stood next to the 16th century Vicarage which was demolished in the 1870's to allow the surrounding land to be come the new cemetery opposite St Mary's church.
IMPORTANT: If you are walking the shorter route after St Mary's CM 1822 then refer to Parish Peregrination - St Alban's Court. If you are intending to walk the whole route refer to GC2WMK1 Parish Peregrination - Carvet for directions.
