Geocache Description:

Slēpnis veltīts kādreizējam Liepājas-Aizputes dzelzceļam.
Netālu no slēpņa atrodas Aizputes stacijas ēka un dzelzceļa uzbērums.

Cache is dedicated to former Liepaja-Aizpute narrow gauge railway. Near cache are Aizpute railway station building and track foundation.

Vecāka gadagājuma kurzemnieki vel labi atceras lēnīgo bānīti, kas pukškinaja no Liepājas uz Aizputi. Tauta to devēja par eizenbāniti, tējkatliņu vai čuk-čuk bānīti. Īstenibā šis bānītis nebija nekāds nīkulis, tā sliežu ceļš bija veselus 1000mm plats. Ja zinām, ka vismazākajam bānitim šis platums ir 600mm, bet Rietumeiropa pieņemts standarts 1435mm, tad sapratīsim, cik nopietns bija ceļš ar dzelzs zirgu.
Liepājas-Aizputes dzelzceļa būvētāji un īpašnieki tolaik bija ietekmīgākie Kurzemes muižnieki Kārlis Manteifels un Leons Burcholcs, ka ari Liepājas un Aizputes pilsētu galvas – Hermanis Adolfi un Vilhelms Grots. Līnija ekspluatācijā nodota 1899. gada 4. aprīlī, tas garums bija 48,8 km. Iespaidīgākā stacijas ēka bija Aizpute, savukārt pārējās lielākoties bija necilas koka būves. Līnijā bija šādas stacijas un pieturas punkti: Liepāja, Krustojums, Ezerpils, Grobiņa, Ilgale, Rolava, Taši, Liegi, Aistere, Rava, Spagi, Dunalka, Cīrava, Dzērve, Ievade, Tebra un Aizpute. Brauciens ilga divas ar pusi stundas, vidējais bānīša ātrums bija 10 km//h.
Uzlabojoties ceļu kvalitātei un attīstoties autobusu satiksmei, Aizputes čuk-čuk bānītis lēnām zaudēja savus pasažierus, līdz pārstāja čukāt 1964. gadā pēc vilciena katastrofas, kad uz pārbrauktuves no sliedēm noskrēja lokomotīve.
No Latvijas šaursliežu dzelzceļa pasaules godības saglabājušās tikai dažas lokomotīves: ka muzejisks retums Gulbenes-Alūksnes mazais bānītis un 3 km gara bānīša trase Ventspils jūrmalā, kurā eksotiku bauda ekskursanti. Vērīgs ceļotājs šur tur vel pamanīs ari Liepājas-Aizputes dzelzceļa stigas paliekas.

Older people still remember the slow paced train, that used to run from Liepaja to Aizpute. It was called `eisenbahn` and `choo-choo train`. Actually this train wasn't that small, since track gauge was 1000 mm. As we know, smallest railways had just 600 mm, but western Europe standard for railways is 1435 mm.
Liepajas-Aizputes railway builders and owners were dominant landlords of Kurzeme Karlis Manteifels and Leons Burcholcs, as well as mayors of Liepaja and Aizpute – Hermanis Adolfi un Vilhemlms Grots. Liepaja-Aizpute railway was launched on 4ht of April in 1899, its length was 48.8 km. Most impressive was Aizpute's station, others mostly were humble wooden buildings. Railway had following stations and stops: Liepaja, Krustojums, Ezerpils, Grobina, Ilgale, Rolava, Taši, Liegi, Aistere, Rava, Spagi, Dunalka, Cirava, Dzerve, Ievade, Tebra and Aizpute. Trip took two and a half hours, average speed of train was 10 km/h.
As quality of roads improved and bus transportation advanced, train was slowly loosing passengers, until it stopped in 1964 after an accident where the locomotive derailed at one of the crossings.
There are just few locomotives of Latvia's narrow gauge railways left: Gulbenes-Aluksnes railway and 3 km long track in Ventspils museum. Keen traveler will notice Liepaja-Aizpute railway footpaths remains.
