Geocache Description:

The Sousa da Sé halt used to be one of the flagstops of the Portuguese railway line linking the Alentejo line (at station Casa Branca - White House) to Estremoz, establishing the rail link to the city of Évora, through Montemor-o-Novo, Évora, Arraiolos and Estremoz. The line, the leg Évora-Casa Branca was inaugurated on September 14, 1863. some other lines opened later: the Estremoz-Évora section on 22 December 1873 and Estremoz- Vila Viçosa on the 1st of August, 1905, which allowed the Royal Family to spend time more often in the palace of the latter village, because of the shortened trip.

At present the transport of passengers and goods is only active up to Évora (the movement of goods to Estremoz was suspended in early 2009).
