The background story is that Hans Nicolai Hansen, 1853-1923, a Danish cartoonist, painter and graphic designer, who lived in Copenhagen, built a summer residence with a studio at “Ørnebjerg” in Rebild Bakker. The house didn’t have access to water, so they had to get the water from Ravnkilde, and the heat came from the big fireplace. Wood for the fireplace was plentiful just outside the door. Now the place is overgrown but, when you visit the location, imagine that there used to be a beautiful view to every side of the house. The son Bernt Hjelje took the name in 1902 and the descendants – including danish actress Iben Hjejle – has since had this surname.

Bernt and his friends visited the house on ”Ørnebjerg” many times. When these people visited the house on the hill they had hired a local cook to make dinner for them. One day betwen christmas and new year’s eve in 1924 the young people took a walk in Rold Forrest. The cook had made soup for them but to increase the enjoyment they added a large amount of whiskey. The atmosphere and mood rose in the house. One of the men, Eigil Knuth, played the flute on top of closet. Suddenly they heard someone pounding on the large windows of the studio. The young pretty intoxicated people looked anxiously into the darkness, afraid that the locals had arrived to scold at them for all the trouble they caused.

This was however not the case, but three friends of the family, one of these friends was the Danish atomic physicist Niels Bohr. They had heard of the sweet life on “Ørnebjerg” and wanted to join them. Therefore they had walked all the way from Skørping to the house to pay them a visit. The night resolved in more whiskey and at the wee hours Niels Bohr was followed back to the inn Skørping. The day after he continued his tour in Himmerland.

The cache is a small, which is hidden inside one of the many walls of the house, in the corner of the kitchen.

Have a nice trip to ӯrnebjerghuset
