The cache is dedicated to the memory of Cyril Bean (1930-2012).
Cyril (Cy to his family and friends) and his wife, Iris, were co-founders of A Coventry Way – a 40-mile footpath encircling Coventry. He left an amazing legacy, not just the long-distance walk. He wrote a booklet of the walk, with detailed maps and a route description. Later, he produced a book of 21 Circular Walks, broadly based on the main walk – several thousand copies of the book were sold. The front cover photo shows Cyril at one of his favourite locations, within sight of this very cache. His own GPS receiver was frequently used to record waypoints, for inclusion in his books, though he never lost faith in his trusty compass.
Cyril also designed colourful display boards, several of which are located at locations around ACW. His voice was heard as a member of the region’s Local Access Forum. He also contributed to Geocaching, siting several of the original ACWA caches. With his son, Duncan, he placed a number of caches in the Peak District, under the name of Dicy Penn. Cyril's passing is a great loss to the community generally, and to geocaching.
This cache was part of a series of caches created by ‘A Coventry Way Association’, but most have been archived. The association was originally formed to promote a long-distance footpath, A Coventry Way, and to support local authorities in the path’s maintenance. Appropriately, this cache was launched on the day of the annual challenge walk in 2012. Over 250 individual walkers and runners passed within a couple of metres of the site. The cache contains a logbook, but there is no space for swaps. It is located on a public footpath just over halfway round walk 1.
