Inskip's Road is named for John Inskip (Inkeep), who in 1762 surveyed the cedar swamp here on the Indian Trail which crossed the state.
Timber was bountiful and Inskip built a saw mill on the Great Egg Harbor River. Cedar shingles were made from the plentiful Atlantic White Cedar.
Near the saw mill a "public ford was erected" on the Great Egg. It was used by the Indians as they passed through the area on their way from the coast to places inland. Settlers and other travelers also used the trail and ford. The old trail eventually became a wagon road. After a time the Indian Trail was abandoned as other roads were built through out the area.
Besides the saw mill, John Inskip established a "deer park" by fencing in the deer with a high rail fence.
