Geocache Description:

SLO: To je dodatek k zakladu Kricac/Shoutbox.
ENG: This is a bonus cache for Kricac/Shoutbox.

Slovenski opis:

English description:

The cache is hidden in the woods. From its location you can see a house (Pot na Drenikov vrh 1) to which radio sector was moved after termination of Radio Shoutbox’s operation.

Activists from mason sector built a bunker inside a house in 1942. It was hidden so well that occupiers never found it even though they searched the house repeatedly. Bunker is still inside the house and opening mechanism is functioning. Owners of the house kindly showed it to us. Entrance point is in the toilet room. One can open it by pulling a plug and thus move a ground plate big enough for one person to climb the ladder into cellar 3x3 meters wide.

Hiding place was meant for illegal radio station which was supposed to maintain connection between Ljubljana and liberated zone. In the garden by the wooden shed they put a metal pole with pinwheel and weather station. They used it as an antenna. Wooden shed was remade into a working shop where radio stations for partisans were built and repaired. After Italian capitulation in September 1943 radio sector moved to liberated zone to join other partisans’ workshops.

Activist Vida Lasič returned to Ljubljana in the end of summer 1944 with the mission to make a permanent radio connection with HQ of Slovenian partisans. She knew exactly that her radio station had too strong short wave transmitter which was easy to locate and was therefore unsuitable for illegal operations. UKV transmitter would be much better, but they would need a relay station somewhere close to Ljubljana which was not possible. Circumstances were harsher than in time of Shoutbox: lots of activists were imprisoned, exiled or joined partisans, so she had only a few safe locations available. She couldn’t hide in bunker inside the house because of quisling subtenant, but she could use wooden shed at night.

Germans indeed almost immediately discovered her transmitter and then followed and hampered its operation for months. A large military unit finally arrested Lasič there in November 1944. They were shocked to see just a fragile girl of 18 as they were convinced that they are following a group of Chetniks trying to establish connection with Allied forces. That fact saved lives of Lasič and her colleagues: this group of German interrogators had no experience with partisans and no practical knowledge of their activities, so Vida got some time to mislead them and thus enabled her assistants to flee to safety.

Vida Lasič was released from prison a few days before liberation of Ljubljana. With her colleagues she repaired Ljubljana radio station which Germans broke at their retreat - just in time to announce to Slovenians on 9th May 1945 that Ljubljana was liberated.
