Geocache Description:

PRESIHAJOCA JEZERA NA PIVSKEM 18 – SEMBIJSKO JEZERO

INTERMITTENT LAKES IN THE PIVKA BASIN 18 – SEMBIJSKO JEZERO

V pivski kotlini se nahaja 18 obicajno pojavljajocih se jezer. Proti severozahodu si sledijo Sembijsko jezero, Kalsko jezero, Laneno jezero, Backo jezero, Kljunov ribnik, Veliki dol (za Kalcem), Veliko in Malo Zagorsko jezero, Veliko in Malo Drskovsko jezero, Parsko jezero, Radohovsko jezero, Klenski dol, Palsko jezero, Petelinjsko jezero, Krajnikov dol in Jeredovce.

There are as many as 18 regular lakes in the Pivka basin. Towards the northwest the following lakes occur: Sembijsko jezero, Kalsko jezero, Laneno jezero, Backo jezero, Kljunov ribnik, Veliki dol (za Kalcem), Malo Zagorsko jezero, Veliko Zagorsko jezero, Veliko Drskovsko jezero, Malo Drskovsko jezero, Parsko jezero, Radohovsko jezero, Klenski dol, Palsko jezero, Petelinjsko jezero, Krajnikov dol and Jeredovce.

Sembijsko jezero is the southernmost lake in Upper Pivka. Westwards from the lake, not far away, the karstified region of Upper Pivka borders on the flysch region of the Reka valley. The name of a small hill above the lake (Jezerni hrib – “Lake Hill”, 598 m asl) gives evidence of this interesting karst phenomenon also when the nearby overgrown pastures are completely dry. With its bottom at an elevation of 558.8 m asl, Sembijsko jezero is not the highest lake of all; the Laneno and Backo jezero lakes are situated at higher elevations. The flooding area around the villages Knezak and Bac also lies about 10 m higher. The lake gathers its water from the vast and deeply karstified Sneznik plateau. The water from the lake outflows through the Podstenjsek karst spring and further to the Adriatic Sea. In November 2000, the water level of Sembijsko jezero exceeded its mean value by 10 m and reached an elevation of 569.5 m asl. At that time, the water of the Podstenjsek spring originated from the Kozja jama cave, at 575 m asl, which lies around 30 m above the permanent spring.
