There has been a church on the current site since at least 1180. Although the towns development over the years has left St Leonards standing on the outskirts, it still remains the Parish Church for Deal.

The present building is a cocktail of various architectural styles and includes important features from many, dating back as far as 1180. It has indeed developed in a manner which lead one Bishop to call it "The most cockeyed church in Christendom" It is well worth a visit to discover exactly what he meant!
