Para reclamar esta earthcache deverá enviar-me, através do meu perfil e antes de qualquer registo, as respostas às seguintes questões. Se algo estiver incorrecto será contactado. Não é necessário esperar por qualquer autorização. Por favor não envie fotografias. Essas são mais úteis no registo.

Nas coordenadas da earthcache deverá ver uma marmita de gigante com uma forma fora do normal. Como aqui poderá a recepção do sinal não é a melhor a posição ideal de observação é ter a marmita centrada aos pés e com a foz do rio à frente. Ou seja estar a montante da marmita.

1 - A maior marmita do local. Qual é o comprimento do eixo maior? Qual é o comprimento do eixo menor?

2 - O eixo maior da marmita está orientado no sentido do rio ou perpendicular a este?

3 - Qual é a forma da marmita? O que terá acontecido para ter esta forma peculiar?

4 - Dentro da marmita há um veio de uma rocha de cor diferente da rocha envolvente. Qual é a cor desse veio? E é possível ver alguma letra formada por esse veio?

5 - Do lado esquerdo e a menos de um metro do lado superior da marmita há outra muito mais pequena. Qual é o seu diâmetro? Já parou o seu processo de formação? Explique a sua resposta.

At the earthcache coordinates you should see one giant pothole with an unusual shape. Has the signal reception could not be at its best, the ideal observation position is with the pothole centered at your feet and the river mouth in front of you. You should be upstream regarding the pothole.

1 - The biggest pothole at the place. What is the length of its longest axle? And the shortest axle length?

2 - Is the main axis of the pothole oriented towards the river or perpendicular to it?

3 - What is the shape of the pothole? What has happened to have this peculiar form?

4 - Inside the pothole there is a vein of a rock of different color from the surrounding rock. What color is this rock vein? And is it possible to see some letter formed by that vein?

5 - At the left side a less than a meter away of the upper pothole wall there is a significant smaller pothole. What is its diameter? Is the pothole's formation concluded? Explain your answer.

Uma marmita

As marmitas de gigante ou marmitas turbilhonares, também conhecidas popularmente como caldeiras, são depressões, mais ou menos arredondadas, com dimensões bastante variáveis, existentes no leito rochoso de alguns rios e no fundo das quais se encontram seixos e areias.

As marmitas parecem ter origem em irregularidades existentes nos leitos rochosos dos rios. Estas irregularidades retêm nas suas proximidades alguns seixos. A acumulação de seixos vai provocar um movimento turbilhonar da água e consequentemente um movimento circular das partículas. Pouco a pouco, devido ao atrito, as partículas vão escavando depressões mais ou menos circulares, no leito do rios, dentro das quais ficam aprisionadas. Com o decorrer do tempo, as depressões aumentam de dimensões e os seixos que estão no seu interior tendem a ficar esféricos.

Como são formadas as marmitas:

Apesar de existirem marmitas com vários metros de diâmetro e profundidade, as mais frequentes possuem dimensões na ordem dos decímetros.

One pothole

A giant's kettle, also known as a giant's cauldron or pothole, is a cavity or hole which appears to have been drilled in the surrounding rocks by eddying currents of water bearing stones, gravel, and other detrital matter.

Potholes vary in size from a few inches to several feet in depth and diameter. They most commonly occur in shields, where there are ancient rocks (granite, gneiss) with different resistances to erosion, so strong pebbles can fall into small cavities in stream bottoms and swirl, making the cavities wider and deeper. The hardness of the pebbles must be the same or higher than the rock at the bottom of stream where the kettle is forming. In areas where there are diamonds and quartz pebbles, the hardness of these carve potholes and sometimes remain trapped in the bottom of them.

How potholes are created:

Giant's kettles can also be formed while the surface is covered by a glacier. Water, produced by the thawing of the ice and snow, forms streams on the surface of the glacier, which, having gathered into their courses a certain amount of morainic debris, finally flow down a crevasse as a swirling cascade or moulin. The sides of the crevasse are abraded, and a vertical shaft is formed in the ice. The erosion may be continued into the bed of the glacier; and, the ice having left the district, the giants kettle so formed is seen as an empty shaft, or as a pipe filled with gravel, sand or boulders. Such cavities and pipes afford valuable evidence as to the former extent of glaciers.

Embora o acesso ao ponto zero seja possível sem ser por canyoning todo o cuidado é pouco pois o terreno não é o mais simpático. Aqui há todas as informações sobre como aceder descendo o rio com material e conhecimentos adequados. Estude apropriadamente e previamente como aceder ao ponto zero.

Although ground zero could be reached not using canyoning means one should be extremely careful. This is not a forgiving terrain. Here there is all the needed information about canyoning in this river. Please study thoroughly your path before to reach ground zero.
