Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Barren’s Nature Trail.  A pine and oak barrens is a type of savanna.  A savanna is an open landscape of prairie grasses and wildflowers with scattered trees.  Before the European settlers came to Wisconsin, central Wisconsin consisted of a mix of barrens, prairies, and dense woodlands.  Through farming and development much of these areas were eliminated.  The park is working to restore the oak and pine barrens at Buckhorn State Park.   Follow the paved trail to the lookout tower.  Along the way you can listen to the eco box and find out more about the history of the barrens in this area.  The interpretive signs along the trail will also give you information about work being done at the park to restore the Barrens.  From the tower, look out over the barrens.  See what plants and trees you see that provide food and shelter for all of the creatures living in the barrens.  Listen for the gobbles of turkeys that make their homes here, the tapping of woodpeckers, or the call of the sandhill crane.
If you’re lucky you may see one of Ranger Rick’s friends here.  This friend looks like a small dog.  She is reddish in color with a bushy tail.  She is active at night and early in the morning and likes to eat animals from insects to rabbits.  She will also eat berries and fruit.  Find the cache and look for another clue about this animal then stamp her paw on your passport.
