Geocache Description:

The cache is set nearby roman ruins and a Basilica church.  A short walk away is a public beach.

The cache is placed nearby the roman ruins but not in it. It is white canister with a yellow lid and contains log book & pencil, fridge magnet, Australian lapel badge, First to Find key ring and TB

 

Ay Filon/ Ayios Philon is on the coast  in the Karpaz region of North Cyprus.

Follow the signs for Oasis and you will come to the Basilica church
The building has been constructed on ruins dating from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Philon is the saint who converted the people of Karpaz to Christianity in the 4th century. The church comprises a three-part apsis and a courtyard surrounded with columns. There are colourful mosaics on the floor. A domed church was built in the 12th century on the ruins of the old building destroyed by the Arab pirates. It also has a cistern and a baptising room. The region it is in the vicinity of the town of
Karpasia
in the Phoenician period.

This was the site of the ancient city of
Karpasia, founded by the legendary King Pygmalion of Cyprus
. It was a flourishing Christian community until the Arab raiders burnt and sacked it in 802. Its inhabitants fled inland at that time and Rizokarpaso grew up.

There is near-by accommodation and restaurant and a public beach which also accommodates Sea Turtles in nesting and hatching seasons and therefore strictly have access only between the hours of
08:00 - 20:00.
