Geocache Description:

Here is another entry in my series of hides near fire lookouts.  This is Craft Point Lookout, 6025', in the Malheur National Forest.

Craft Point was established as a lookout post in 1930 when the present 15' pole observation tower was constructed.  It likely served as an emergency detection point since the site was never upgraded and was promptly abandoned in the 1940's.  Please do not attempt to climb the tower remains, just appreciate it from the ground.

From Forest Road 28, take the 2815 to the east.  Follow this until you get to the 046 spur.  Take it to the listed parking coordinates, which is where it becomes a closed road.  There is no formal trail to the summit, although you'll encounter many cow trails along your journey.  Head southeasterly from the parking spot, staying on or west of the ridge the whole way (there is a range fence which follows the ridgeline).  The route is fairly open, minimal bushwacking required, although you'll need to navigate lots of loose rocks, and do a short rock scramble as you approach the last stretch.  Distance from parking to summit is about 8/10 mile with 400' elevation gain.  You may be able to get up here from other directions as well, but that's totally up to you! You're looking for a camo-painted snapware container.
