suz55tbird: I think all have logged the event, and the Racer TBs are moving! Thanks to fam2go and wolf11469 for the amazing NM state art--that was unexpected! and fun!!, and to the other cache hiders of the day. I have my work cut out for me, finding caches--if I ever get a weekend at home!
Thanks for everyone attending, and the yummy potluck.
You all make it worth the effort!

Geocache Description:

NB: Event Location has changed to Los Lunas River Park, off Main Street:

N 34 48.162 W 106 42.951

This event cache is one of eleven monthly events during 2012, held to celebrate New Mexico's Statehood Centennial.

We've been north, south, central, and will be going east in November. October after Balloon Fiesta is Valencia County's turn to shine!
As part of each of these monthly events, there will be one special Centennial Cache which will contain a clue to the final Centennial Puzzle Cache. The solution to the puzzle will be easy--if you have all the clues!--and the puzzle cache will be released in December 2012.

Get ready to have some fun and learn some history in Valencia County, New Mexico. There will be some new caches to find, and I'll be handing around hints to some of my tougher hides. We'll have our traditional Poker Run for those that like to compete--it's all luck; there's no advantage to being FTF or anything like that. And, if you don't like to compete, you needn't pick up any Event Cards.

The plan: meet up at 9:30 am at the park by the Bosque Farms library, police station, and town hall (at the above coords). At 10:00 am, event info will be given out. Then, meet back at the park by 4:00 for prizes and a potluck picnic. UTurn will provide hamburgers; I'll have plates and napkins, ketchup, mustard, and mayo. Attendees, bring side dishes, drinks, desserts, burgers, hot dogs, buns, flatware, etc., and BYO CHAIRS! Please indicate what you'll contribute and how many are in your group in your "Will Attend" log.

News Flash from JPohaku:
In addition to all the fun you are going to have searching for caches we are introducing:
The Valencia Goin' 'round in Circles TB Race.
This race is scheduled to begin at the 8th Annual Valencia Fun Day and last at least 1 year.

2012 Race Rules:
The Valencia Goin' 'round in Circles TB Race is a year-long race amongst travel bugs. The race will be of a slightly different design than a typical “how far will it travel” race. In this race, the race is to see how far a TB can travel AND make in back to the start in one year.

Entering the Race:

The planned registration period is from the date the event is published until the end of the 8th Annual Valencia Fun Day.
Only one entry per Geocaching Username. That includes groups that work as teams under one name.
Attach your travel bug to a traveler. The traveler may be whatever you choose, but keep in mind that larger travelers have less caches they can fit into.
Activate your travel bug. The Valencia Goin' 'round in Circles TB Race will provide a standardized race description (see below) for you to use on your Travel Bug page. It is not required, but the information is designed to help inform cachers about the details of the race and how they can help your travel bug.
Drop your TB into this event. DO NOT DROP YOUR TRAVEL BUG IN ANY OTHER CACHE OR EVENT! Doing so would give it miles before the start of the race and will cause it to be disqualified.
All the travel bug racers MUST be dropped into this event cache prior to October 18, 2012. This is so we have time to make a check-in sheet for the physical check-in of your TB on event day.
To physically enter, you MUST bring your travel bug racer to the designated check-in point the morning of the event and turn it over to the Race Coordinator (aka JPohaku). The Race Coordinator will physically place all entrants at the starting line cache, move them from the event page and log them on the starting line cache page.
Late entries after October 18, 2012 will not be accepted. Any entrants who do not physically check-in at the event will not be entered as part of the event.

General Race Rules:
During the race, there a few rules in place.

A TB must travel a MINIMUM of 100 miles away from the starting point before it will be considered as a valid competitor. Failure to complete this requirement in the year is grounds for disqualification.
Dipping (or visiting) is not allowed. However, we can’t stop this from occurring. So how do we handle a dip? If a dip occurs, scoring volunteers recalculate mileage from the starting cache to the ending cache it was dropped into, disregarding any dipped caches. As you might expect this could result in the loss of considerable miles between the two drops. All travel bugs will have an attached tag that states the No Dipping rule. This is to prevent a "cacher friend" from taking your TB all over the world and never leaving it in a cache.
To get credit for a cache drop, the TB must be left in the cache and retrieved by a different cacher. Cachers who have previously handled the TB do not count. This is to prevent two or more "cacher friends" from swapping it back and forth by "dipping" it in a cache.
Contestants in the race are forbidden from handling any racing travel bug. This is done to prevent people from intentionally moving other entries to hinder their travels. If you do pick up one of the bugs by mistake you must get it back into the race at the cache you removed it from as quickly as possible.
Contestants are encouraged to track their own travel bug’s movements. No interim results will be posted anywhere until the 9th Annual Valencia Fun Day in 2013.
There is an inherent risk in releasing any travel bug that it might go missing. If so your travel miles and the distance from the start are frozen at the point it went missing.
At the end of the race, the owner of the travel bug that is the closest to the start point with the most total miles for the year shall be deemed the champion and also shall receive all the bragging rights and due respect for bestowing upon themselves such an honor for a full year to come.

Hints about preparing a TB for the race:

Don't use something large. You want it to fit in a lot of caches.
Use something simple so that it will not get taken during the race because it is pretty and nice or something that someone might just keep.
Take a picture of your Travel Bug and post it on its page.
Enter something in your Travel Bug's Current Goal concerning the race: i.e."I am an entry in Valencia Goin' 'round in circles TB Race; My mission is to add mileage as quickly as possible and beat other Valencia Travel Bug Racers.; PLEASE KEEP ME MOVING; I WOULD LOVE TO TRAVEL INTERNATIONALLY!!!! But I need to get back to Valencia County, New Mexico by October 2013"
