================
ever since the first spanish expeditions to the region in the early 1500's, there have been many tales about the lost mayan gold. indeed, most of the early conquisitadors were motivated by the prospects of the great wealth to be had from the seizure of gold or silver.

the mayan lands themselves were poor in these resources and when no gold was found, the invaders lost interest as they were instead attracted to the reports of great riches elsewhere. this proved to be a factor in forestalling spanish designs of the conquest of maya, which would take over 170 years.

the old legends of mayan gold persisted through the centuries and today we have jewelry, perfumes, and even potatos and walnuts with the name 'mayan gold.'

more recently, Joachim Rittsteig, an expert in mayan writing, claimed to have cracked the mayan code in the Dresden Codex which reveals the location of eight tons of mayan gold. although their expedition found an empty pot and no gold, another treasure map has been obtained for the geocaching community. perhaps you can decipher and locate this lost gold right here in the pacific northwest!

Remember to write down the Maya number symbols found in the log book, or on the lid, that is needed to determine the coordinates of the final cache of this series. After conversion, ten are labeled N and are each a four-digit number. Ten are labeled W and are each a three-digit number. The final cache of this series, A New Era, provides the final numbers and instructions how to add to the prior twenty to determine its coordinates.
