After 378 yards in the tunnel, the canal emerges into the Kent valley, turning sharply right to head to Sedgwick and the gunpowder works, before continuing to Kendal. Amazing route planning and surveying means the canal runs from Preston to Kendal with only the 8 locks at Tewitfield to alter the height. Several major structures were needed to achieve this including Hincaster Tunnel.
Can be part of a nice circular walk including the Hincaster Trailway. The easiest place to park is on the eastern side and walk the delightful Horsepath over the hill, however, if you are careful you can find a safe place on this side. See waypoint below.
CAUTION: The stones at the entrance to the tunnel are very slippery when wet. If you go to have a look in, take care. Note: you can't enter the tunnel only look round the corner.
