Wifeyole and myself hiked from the north trailhead to the south 6.4 miles with our friends Rick and Idie. Along the way we encountered some pristine Wisconsin lakes and not another soul around on Labor Day weekend 2012.
As we didn't have another geocache to search for, we searched for mushrooms with our expert guide, Rick. (he's a fun guy) We found a lot of fungi, but many of it was non edible or even poisonous. We did find a couple of bouquets of honey mushrooms and a prize lobster mushroom. We learned the mushroom hunting adage, "there are old mushroom hunters, there are bold mushroom hunters, but there are no old, bold mushroom hunters." So unless you're 100% sure on what species of wild mushroom you have, don't try it.
If you are searching for this cache, be prepared for a couple mile hike one way. Bring water. There are a couple primitive camps along the trail near the lakes if you are on a longer backpack adventure, but if you are searching for the easiest way to get to the cache and some solitude for a couple hours, I recommend starting at the south trailhead as it is slightly shorter and an elevation decrease to the cache. If you have 2 vehicles, park one at one trailhead and head to the other and grab the cache along the way. There is also a trail from near Perch Lake that could be used to get to the North Country Trail.
In hunting months, make sure to wear blaze orange. Enjoy the hike and the cache hunt.
