How Geocaching Works
Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer
This cache is located along the scenic Iowa River south of Steamboat Rock in the Fallen Rock State Preserve.
The park is open from 6am to 10:30pm. Hunting is allowed in some areas and you should wear blaze orange if visiting during hunting season.
There is an awesome geological formation near this cache that you are sure to enjoy! You could make fairly quick work of this one with minimal hiking if you paddled down the river to get here. Otherwise you're in for a good hike, but well worth it in the end, I promise.
This 122 acre state preserve may be accessed through Tower Rock, Fallen Rock Wildlife Area or the Iowa River. The property has many unique attributes including the native sandstone bluffs that in some places are more than 100 feet high. This area also offers many rare species of plant life including native white pines, as well as yellow and white birch trees. Fallen Rock State Preserve offers fishing, hunting, and hiking along the Iowa River.
The Wildlife area covers 204 acres of land. An eagle’s nest was located in the northern edge of the area, started in 2003 and became active in 2004.
You may park at either the Tower Rock parking area to the north, or the Fallen Rock parking area to the south. If you have a second vehicle you may wish to leave one at each and hike from one end to the other. I will list parking coords for both locations.
