Where: Beallach na Ba, aka The Pass of the Cattle, in the middle of the remote Applecross Peninsula. At 626m above mean sea level, it's not the UK's highest surfaced road (as often suggested) but it's not far behind and it's often listed as "Britain's Best Driving Road” thanks to its alpine-like twists and turns and steep inclines. The meet is at the top, in the parking area which (on a good day, and I hope this will be a good day) gives stunning views across to Skye, Raasay and the Small Isles.
When: 1-2pm on Thursday June 20th 2013.
Who: Any and all cachers welcome! If you've not been up here it's an amazing spot in good weather (I've had a cache up here since 2005, which is getting a refresh on my visit) with dramaic views.
How: The easy way to get here is to drive, but even then it pays to read the warning sign at the foot of the hill, where it splits off from the A896. It suggests caravans would be a mistake and I agree. I intend to leave my car down here and cycle up. Join me? If I still have any puff left, I may carry on up to the comms tower to the east of the given co-ords - 776m above sea level.
Why: Because it's there. It's one of those places you may never have reason to visit without caching. Even in poor weather (in which case I'll drive!) it's a magnificent, wild place.
What: A friendly drive-by picnic meet, open to all. Geodogs and kids (I know it's a weekday - unavoidable on my busy schedule, sorry) very welcome. There will be swapping of caching tales and travel items. If you're a newbie or just new to cache meets, you'll be made especially welcome too.
There's a thread about my June 2013 events on the Groundspeak forum and on the GAGB forum.
