Geocache Description:

This hike will take you to the site of an old guard station and fire lookout.

The Red Hill Guard Station was built sometime in the 1930s. It's also known as the Perry Lake Guard Station, which is a more appropriate name since it's much closer to Perry Lake than Red Hill. The guard station had an unusual fire lookout platform up on the roof. Little else is known about the guard station, and it was demolished sometime after the 1960s.

Pictured above is the Red Hill Guard Station in 1954

Access: The hike to get here starts at the Vista Ridge Trailhead and follows the the Old Vista Ridge Trail north and east. The hike is about three miles one-way. This trail was abandoned by the Forest Service for many years, but volunteers cleared the brush and downed trees in 2007. On your hike you will pass several viewpoints with spectacular views of Mt. Hood to the south. For a description of the hike and a trail map visit OregonHikers.org.

You can no longer drive Road 660 all the way to the site of the guard station since that road has been partially decommissioned. You may be able to drive part of the way and walk the rest of the way.
