Geocache Description:

The Chapel of Santo António (Saint Anthony) is one of many that are a part of the Madeira's Roman Catholic Church's heritage, but above all Madeira's heritage. Santo António is considered patron of the amputees, the animals, the sterile, the boaters, the old people, the pregnants, the fishermen, the agricultures, the travellers and sailers, the horses and donkeys, the poor and opressed; it is Portugal's patron, and is invoked to find lost things, to conceive children to prevent shipwrecks and to get married.

This chapel is situated on the center of Ponta do Sol's county, next to the town hall from where we can see the village and the beach being this way also a beautiful belvedere. It's a small rural chapel probably build on XVIIth century (although we cannot confirm the building date because of the lack of records), and rebuilt in the XXth century. It retains the traces of the original plant, with an addorsed sacristy on the right side and an mannerist arc door with regional red stonework with a quadrangular hole from above. Inside it you can find a polychrome and gold altarpiece of late baroque style. In the 1990's it was object of deep recovery works, being adapted for county's exposition room.
