Geocache Description:

W marcu 2009 r. przybył do Gdańska pierwszy takin.

The Gdańsk Zoo is one of the biggest zoological gardens in Poland. It is one of the most well-known recreational and educational places on the Polish coast, visited each year by an inordinate number of tourists and inhabitants of Tricity.

The idea to establish a zoological garden in Tricity first appeared in the late 1940s and was wholeheartedly supported by the citizens of Gdańsk. The enthusiasm of people was so great that though initially reluctant to support the project, the authorities of the city in 1953 finally gave the official permission to establish a zoo in Gdańsk. The park and forest complex of 100 ha located near the centre of Oliwa in the Valley of the Forest Mill (Polish: Dolina Leśnego Młyna) were designated for this purpose.
This location was chosen due to its excellent topographic conditions and the mild microclimate of the valley, where from the end of the 19th century to 1945 functioned a guest-house for people with respiratory problems and rheumatism.
Gdańsk Zoo was officially opened on 1st May 1954. The first inhabitants of the Zoo were small animals given by the citizens of Tricity: rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, foxes, roe deer, pheasants and budgerigars. The collection was gradually extended by other exotic animals given usually by sailors.

Between 1989 and 1998, the collection of the Oliwa Zoo was enlarged by pygmy hippopotamuses, antelopes, South American tapirs, Nile hippopotamuses, zebras, capybaras, orangutans, kangaroos, maned wolves, flamingos, jackass penguins, Arabian camels, Bactrian camels, Javan lutungs and mandrills. The “Children’s Zoo", which is very popular with kids, was opened for the youngest visitors. Apart from that, a new pavilion for anthropoid apes, orangutans and chimpanzees was built. Thanks to these investments and to the new, more attractive visual setting of the garden, a larger number of people visited the Oliwa Zoo in recent years.

Used to be a mMagnetic container, furnished in zoological style, now it is another design, placed in the same location. The cache is placed outside of the Zoo.
