Geocache Description:

This cache is in an attractive location under the largest stained glass window in London. It is in an easy location on a private street which is (theoretically) still part of Cambridgeshire and would be suitable for children of all ages.

St Etheldreda's church was built around 1250 as a "double-decker" church ie one chapel on top of the other. It is a very interesting building which by some miracle ( . .?) has survived the Great fire of London, the Reformation (Henry VIII), a direct hit from a bomb in the Blitz of the Second World War and every other threat to its existence. It is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country and one of only two surviving buildings from the period of Edward I.

If you get a chance to go inside then you'll find that it's really unusual. The main chapel (upstairs) has the magnificent window (which is even more impressive from inside because of higher light levels outside) and downstairs (the crypt) has an interesting model of the original extent of the buildings around the church. If you enjoy your visit then there is an opportunity to buy a guidebook or leave a donation. There is also a cafe which is open for lunch 12-2.30.

St Etheldreda's website is here.

When you are looking for the cache, leave no stone unturned. Please take your own pen and write your NAME ONLY in the logbook. There isn't space to leave anything else in the cache (unless it's tiny)! The cache is located outside the church.
