Geocache Description:

Vecais Stenders

Lindes - Birzgales 16. gs. Baznīckalns
The Linde - Birzgale 16th century church mound

Latviski:

1567. gadā šajā vietā no tīra ozolkoka tika uzcelta baznīca. Laikā no 1730.-1740. gadam uz pirmās baznīcas augstajiem pamatiem uzbūvēja jaunu baznīcu. Torņa būvi ar garu smaili pabeidza 1775. Gadā. Pēc 100 gadiem iebūvēja Augusta Martina ērģeles, iegādājās vācu gleznotāja Junkera altārgleznu „Kristus pie krusta”. Kapenēs zem baznīcas apglabāti Plettenbergu dzimtas piederīgie. Baznīca bija Eiropas nozīmes kultūras piemineklis. 1965. No 1994.

English:

The oaken church was built in 1567 but during 1730 –1740 a new church was built on the high ruins of an old one. The building process of the tower’s soaring spire was finished in 1775. 100 years later the church got its organs built in by August Martins and the altarpiece “Kristus pie krusta” (“The Christ
at the Cross”) painted by German painter Junker. The kinsfolk of Plettenberg dynasty were buried in the crypt. The church was the cultural monument of
European significance. The church and the neighboured cemetery of brethren from Word War I were destroyed in 1965 by the power of communistic
occupation. Then the new building of local government was built on the ruinsof a former church and the new Birzgale Lutheran chapel was opened and
consecrated there on 10 June 1990. Since 1994 the chapel has also been used by Birzgale Catholic chapel. This church mound is famous by the only
monument in Latvia to a long-gone church and its clergyman known as “Old Stenders”. The monument (author Ojārs Feldbergs) was put up in 1989 thanks to the donations of local people.
