Geocache Description:

This is a series of caches representing predicted dates for apocalyptic events such as the Rapture, Las Judgment, or any other event that would result in the end of humanity, civilization, the planet, or the entire universe. The Caches represent the dates of predictions from notable groups or individuals of when the world was, or is, forecasted to end.

Well 11:11 (UTC) on December 21, 2012 has come and gone and the world has….continued?

Well I hope none of you are disappointed, but the Mayan Calendar finished one of its great cycles on December 2012, which fueled countless theories about the end of the world, all of which have failed to provide us with any excitement.

We had theories which suggested a galactic alignment which would create chaos on Earth because of the gravitational effect between the Sun and the Black hole called Sagittarius A, which is located at the center of our galaxy.  Well no planetary alignment happened and it is likely not to occur in the next few decades. And even if they did, the effects on our planet would be negligible.

And then there was the theory that involves a 'polar shift', which means a reversal of the north and south magnetic poles. While it is believed that the Earth is overdue for a geomagnetic reversal, this can take up to 5,000 years to complete and does not start on any particular date. The 'polar shift' theory is totally impossible. Although continents move slowly throughout time, a magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia and would not cause any harm to life on Earth. The biggest problem with a geomagnetic shift is that all our compasses would no longer work, as north would no longer be north, we would have to hold all of our maps at a strange non-north angles to figure out where we are.

The end of the Mayan calendar does not imply the end of the world, only the end of the Mayan long-count period. The 'long count' is a part of the Maya Calendar shaped like a wheel. When we reach the end of the wheel, and when a wheel goes all the way around what does a wheel do, it will turn to the beginning again, just like our modern Gregorian calendar starts again every January 1.

But don’t worry, we have only 5125 years until the Mayan Calendar wheel goes all the way around again, which means we have until the year 7137 to get ready for the end of the world again.  I’m sure some nuts out there will think that the world will once again end when that wheel goes all the way around.

Oh, and one more thing….What were the Mayans doing on December 21, 2012, well they were celebrating (yes, having a party) the beginning of a new era.

Oh...and the cache, well it's a pretty straight forward find in the BLM North Hills.  Enjoy.
