Geocache Description:

This cache is located overlooking the Galena Train Depot. Bring your camera. This is the perfect spot to take pictures of the Depot and the city of Galena.

The Depot was built in 1857. This is where Grant got on the train to head to the Civil War. It was also used by the Jo Daviess Guard, The Anti Bauregard Guard and the 45th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, all formed in Galena and off to serve in the Civil War.

There is no longer any passenger service to Galena. Freight trains still pass through but do not stop. The area on the other side of the tracks that is now parking lot and greenspace used to be railroad yards and a cement plant. Visualize coal piles, oil bulk plants, and a row of sheds containing those rail worker carts with the hand pump levers.

There also used to be more tracks and another train depot on the other side of the river. It was all torn down and that area is now the dike. Of course over the years there have been lots of bridges, for cars and trains. Spring floods and huge chunks of ice knocked them all out.
