Geocache Description:

The Château d'Orthe

This castle (also named château de Montréal) is located in the municipality of Peyrehorade in the Landes departement.

Built in the 16th century beside the river « Gaves réunis » and transformed in the 17th and 18th centuries. Ancient home of the viscounts of Orthe, it has been successively a military hospital (from 1795 to 1814), a monastery and a technical school. Today it is the town hall of Peyrehorade.

At the four corners of this building you will see stout round towers.

Don't miss the Courtyard of Honour : a paved alley going through an impressive wrought iron gate from the 18th century, the beautiful vaulted halls and the « Salon de Diane » on the first floor.

On the other side of the Route Royale : the semi-circular stables date from 1745. The long service quarters beside them have been built at the same time but the roof has been replaced in the 19th century.
