Geocache Description:

The Goat Island Adventure Weekend

This event is one of several events during the Goat Island Adventure Weekend from May 18 to May 19, 2013. Please log a 'Will Attend' in order to receive notifications concerning the weekend's events and potential alternatives for inclement weather.

The Event

Goat Island Adventure (Part Two) - Spring 2013 is scheduled for May 19, 2013 from 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM. The intent is meet and share stories of the previous night's event and to make plans to go after the caches on the island. A photo opportunity on Goat Island will be a part of the event. Please post a "Will Attend" log if you plan to join us.

Basic Safety Considerations

  • Take along and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
  • Take waterproof bags to protect your gear, especially those things that don't mix well with water, such as cell phones.
  • Please avoid inflatables for watercraft. The unpredictable currents and hazards under the waterline make this a risk and a challenge.
  • Please wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (PFD).
  • If you are a novice, ask for tips on canoeing and kayaking, seek professional instruction before your trip if possible.
  • Know your launch and take-out points ahead of time.
  • If severe weather approaches get off the river as soon as possible and seek shelter.
  • If you capsize, stay upstream from your boat. Currents pushing against your canoe can trap and hold you underwater.
  • Avoid overhanging limbs and submerged logs that can overturn a boat and cause injury.
  • Wear sturdy shoes. Sharp objects can cut bare feet.
  • Be aware of hazards such as poison ivy, stinging nettles, ticks, slippery banks, crumbling cliffs and rattlesnakes.
  • Do not dive or jump into the river. The river can be shallow with many rocks.
  • Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and insect repellent.
  • Avoid dehydration and drink plenty of water.

Kayaks and Canoes

We have a limited supply of kayaks and canoes available for use. If possible, please use your own or try to find one to borrow. If that doesn't work, please contact beta59 to see about availability.

Bonus

Some other events are also planned for the weekend. There may also be some new caches planted prior to the event. Participants may have an opportunity to score an FTF or two! No guarantees for this, but it has been known to happen.

Inclement Weather

In the event of bad weather or rough river conditions, this event will be canceled or rescheduled. Please stay posted and watch for updates on this page.
