Look about and find some of the wonderstone outcrops. Please email those answers to me, do not put them in the log.
1- What are the colors that you see
2- Are the bands uniform in thickness and color?
3- Put a small drop of water on a wonderstone piece. Does it appear to be very porous? does the water sink into the stone or bead on the surface? explain.
4-Can you see the grains that make up the rock? silt, sand, or larger.
5- Do you see any other crystals, or rocks, minerals mixed into your sample? Explain.
The stones around this area are commonly referred to as wonderstone. That is not really an official name ast it it actually just a rhyolite. Rhyolite is a stone that is made primarily of Silica, more than 60% actually. The white coloring comes from the large amount of air and other gases that make up the actual stone. However the stone tends to be very porous and allows water and other minerals to seep through the stone. Though it may not be quick, or visible to the naked eye.
Some parts of the stone may be partially vitrified, as the heat needed to create the stone is near the melting point. So you may see small or large crystals that are solid or appear to be solid.
Add to that minerals like iron oxide that will seep into the rhyolite and then stain some areas red. Areas that are very porous will have more, where areas that are more vitrified (glassy) will be whiter.
The rocks that are red have been chemically altered to be red hematite, while the orange and brown are goethite
