Geocache Description:

Colburn House State Historic Site

Before you start the Maine State Parks GeoTour, pick up a Maine State Parks Passport at a Maine State Park or Historic site - available during the summer season. At each official Maine State Park geocache, stamp your passport with the geocache stamp - find all eight!

Location: The Colburn barn was built in 1849 by the grandson of Reuben Colburn. It housed two horses, two milk cows, and an occasional ox and was filled with hay in the fall so that the animals would have plenty of food through the winter. In early August, this is one of the best blackberry patches around. The barn is now a museum that displays boats used on the Kennebec River as far back as the 1870s.

Colburn House State Historic Site
Established 1974

No, George Washington never slept here, but he knew the owner. Two people who figured prominently in the American Revolution did sleep in this house — Col. Benedict Arnold and Aaron Burr. Built in 1765, this colonial Federal-style house was home to generations of the prominent Colburn family. In 1775, Arnold led an expedition of more than 1,000 Continental soldiers up the Kennebec River to attack the British stronghold of Quebec City. Reuben Colburn provided supplies, maps, intelligence, and 220 small boats called “bateaux” to the expedition. The house includes a colonial cooking hearth and an exhibit about famous midwife Martha Ballard. Located on the banks of the Kennebec River along Route 27 in Pittston. Telephone: (207) 287-4975
