Where da Water from (5) Protected
How Geocaching Works
Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer
Number 5 in the series of where da water from.
This one looks at the protection of native vegetation and water quality.
You would hardly think so looking from here but down the end of this storage is a very significant path of remnant vegetation that has 2 threatened Orchids and a rare Bossieae (Pea Flower or Egg and Bacon Plant). These survive because their is basically no disturbance of the area and the area is also protected for its conservation values.
Native vegetation in the catchments is also used to filter the water and slow its flow down hill which causes erosion. This is why melbourne once had the reputation as the best water in the world. Unfortunately 70% of our catchments are now open to logging and one dam sucks water from the yarra river down stream of human occupation, so we spend billions of dollars each year adding chlorine and other stuff to purify the water.
You probably notice a lot of fences around here. Melbourne Water is very security conscience. Terrorism research indicates that water supplies could be targeted. One of the days I worked here I was told that because of the amount of water flowing through here if a terrorist attach was to occur it would probably not be noticed, unless they where able to kept many truck loads of poison into the supply at once.
