NOTICE: A NEW HUNT HAS BEEN POSTED!!! SEE LOGS BELOW FOR MORE INFO!
The above Coords are the starting point for the first quest. They will change after each hunt is completed...see directions below for more info on how this is done.
How the North Carolina OBX SCAVENGER HUNT works:
This cache-hunt begins by the creation of a quest for a Scavenger Hunt item or place located anywhere along North Carolinas beautiful coastal strand of barrier islands known as the Outer Banks (OBX) and anywhere in the coastal plain of the state of North Carolina.
To log this cache, a finder first locates the Quest item/location, marks the coordinates of the item, takes a photo of their GPS w/coords displayed with the quest item nearby. You then simply post the above info with your log.
Once you log the find, the FIRST finder then gets to decide and post in their log what the next quest item will be.
The coordinates of the find will be posted as the new starting point for the cache and then the hunt will continue for the quest item.
Quest items/locations should be located ONLY in North Carolina anywhere above or along the OBX, out in the Atlantic Ocean to 60 nautical miles and/or along the mainland coastal areas. However, the Piedmont is also fair game.
Items can be ANYTHING interesting--it is your choice since you worked to find "your" quest item and found it. But be sensible here...nothing impossible to do/find (example: Jesse Helms' boxer shorts run up the flag pole of the USS NC Battleship) and please, nothing tasteless or vulgar.
Quest items/hunts must be anything that do not put the potential finder in excessive danger or that are illegal. Use good judgement and give the next hunter an interesting and creative challenge that they will have the ability to complete.
Quests can be a person, place or thing or action or any combination of the above. You can create a cache-quest that requires the hunter to be photographed with someone, at a certian place, with something or while performing a specific action. It is OK if they have to get wet, tired or dirty but if you can get someone to have their picture made drinking a beer and eating Oysters with Michael Jordan on the roof-deck of Howard's Pub on Okracoke island--I will send you a trophy engraved with "Master Scavenger Cache Hunter of the World" and several other cool "trophy" items.
The quest finder must then post in the log: the coordinates, city and a photo of their GPS with the quest item.
If a quest hunt goes unfound for one month from the time of the initial posting, the last finder will be asked to provide a new quest item.
The cache owner (CrotalusRex) reserves the right to remove or alter any newly posted quest item or to provide a new quest item at any time.
If a quest item is found by several geocachers at the same time, the first finder wins and has the right to choose the next quest item/hunt. Any quest hunter may log this cache multiple times, but not for their own quest item and quests cannot be duplicated.
REMEMBER! This cache may pass thru WILD areas with all of their wild components: live wild creatures(that may hurt you--oh my!), mud, dirt, scat(fresh and sunbleached...the fresh will be accompanied by a rather unpleasent odor so WATCH OUT! Often, if you poke a stick at scat, fresh works best, just the right way you will be able to determine what type of creature left it there and just what that creature had eaten for its last meal!! WOW-ain't nature grand!), uneven ground, rough surfaces(that may abrade your skin), heat, cold, wet water(that becomes hard and cold in the colder times and OH MY--this often will fall unpredictably from the sky and if you are not prepared it will make you and your coverings WET!! See: Weather below), dryness(may also chap exposed skin), rocks(watch out for these things--you may trip on them and fall down!), plants (some you can eat and some will make you itch and bleed), sand (that makes you itch if you get it in your nether-regions), pollen(a by-product of the above plants that may make some of you sneeze, itch and cough), wind(that may chap exposed skin and disturb carefully placed hair), air(this could be anywhere from hot to warm or cool to cold), weather(a combination of many of the factors present here. This is entirely unpredictable unless you believe what the NWS tells you), light and dark (and all the shades in between), unpredictable sounds created from unknown sources (some of these may be pleasent...but sometimes not...and they will hurt your ears!), sometimes you will see a very bright disk overhead (but don't look directly at it as it will damage your eyes. It may also cause red burns on your exposed skin so bring your protective devices and chemicals), often there is a lack of light accompanied by a glowing disk in the sky that is pleasent to look at...and much more! Just remember: there will be plenty of random unplanned events that you will encounter on this hunt and on any venture you take into the natural world--so be ready for them as they are the things that make life worth living!
Feel free to email us with any questions! Special thanks to TVN for the idea for this Geocache hunt and for allowing CrotalusRex to use it as a "North Carolina" cache.
