George Dallas served as vice-president under James Polk. Dallas had previously been a Minister to Great Britain, Minister to Russia and a US Senator. He sometimes called his wife "Mrs. Vice." As vice-president Dallas claimed he cast 31 tie-breaking votes in the US Senate although only 19 can be identified in Senate records.
