This cache is placed at an historic spot in Hencliff woods in Hanham. In 1935, Bessie Gladys Nott who lived there with her husband and son, had an affair with Arthur Franklin who also lived in the woods with his brother. She moved into their cottage for a time but returned to her husband in early May. On 8th May 1935, Arthur Franklin, apparently angered by her return to her marital home, shot her husband wounding him and then shot and killed Bessie. He was hung at Gloucester Gaol on the 27th August 1935. 2 years later, Arthur's brother went to an old quarry near their houses where water collected like a pond. Here, he stood on a rock and shot himself using the gun his brother had murdered Bessie with. From that moment, the waters have been known as DEAD MANS POND.
There is quite a bit written on this murder and suicide and sometimes the stories conflict. A good resource, albeit another that slightly conflicts itself can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/brizzlebornandbred/3318719851/
