The Giant's Tomb


Le Tombeau du Géant, près du hameau de Botassart dans la vallée de la Semois, est un long tertre boisé dominant de 30 mètres la rivière Semois qui en fait un tour presque complet.

 

La légende, écrite par Marcel Leroy, raconte du géant trévire qui avait participé à la bataille de la Sambre où les légions de César avaient défait les tribus gauloises coalisées. Le géant refusait de devenir une bête de cirque vouée aux lions du Colisée. Il fuyait à travers l’Arduina sylva pour rejoindre son pays quand il fut rejoint et cerné par les cavaliers de Labienus auprès du Rocher des Gattes. Se voyant perdu, il se jeta dans le vide du sommet du rocher et le lendemain, des habitants de Botassart ont retrouvé son corps. Ils décidèrent de conduire sa dépouille au sommet de la colline entourée par la rivière et ils lui donnèrent une sépulture digne du courage qu’il avait mis à affronter l’occupant romain.

 

Laissez votre véhicule sur le parking ici : N 49° 49.258 E 005° 02.596 et profitez déjà d’une vue impressionnante sur le Tombeau.

La cache, elle, se trouve en contrebas dans la forêt. Un autre point de vue magnifique sur la Semois vous y attend.

Repérez l’arbre marqué d’une croix ici : N 49° 48.936 E 005° 02.314. La cache se trouve à coté recouverte de pierres plates.

The Giant's Tomb, near the hamlet of Botassart in Semois valley, is a long wooded knoll overlooking 30 meters of the river Semois making an almost full circle.

 

The legend, written by Marcel Leroy, says the Treveri giant who had participated in the Battle of the Sambre where Caesar's legions had defeated the Gallic tribes allied. The giant beast refused to become a circus lions dedicated to the Coliseum. He fled through the Sylvan Arduina to join his country when he was overtaken and surrounded by riders Labienus with the Rock of Gattes. Seeing himself lost, he threw himself into the void of the top of the rock and the next day, residents of Botassart found his body. They decided to drive his body on top of the hill surrounded by the river and they gave him a decent burial courage he had set to face the Roman occupiers.

 

Leave your car in the parking lot here: N 49° 49.258 E 005° 02.596 and enjoy already an impressive view of the Tomb.

 

The cache is located below in the forest. Another magnificent view of the Semois awaits you.

Locate the tree marked with a cross here : N 49° 48.936 E 005° 02.314. The cache is next the tree covered with flat stones.
